If you are looking for a general dentist in NYC who can help you with top-quality inlays and onlays, rely on our team at All Smiles Dental. Our dentistry in New York City makes it easy to get the care you need. These common restorations can make a big difference in the health of your teeth and gums.

What Are Dental Inlays and Onlays?

A dental inlay is very similar to a traditional filling. Inlays fit within the top edges of the tooth. The inlay dental procedure is used when an old filling needs to be removed or replaced. It is appropriate for teeth with mild to moderate decay, or fairly superficial damage.

A dental onlay is similar to an inlay, but an onlay is more extensive. The dental onlay procedure includes more extensive repairs and additional material. The restoration extends over the tops of the tooth edges (known as the cusps) and the work is somewhat more noticeable.

Benefits of Inlays and Onlays

Inlays and onlays are both appropriate for teeth that have too much decay or damage for a filling to provide full treatment. At the same time, they are less intensive than a crown, which fits over the entire visible surface of the tooth.

The main benefits of inlays and onlays include:

  •       Both restorations are made from durable materials that can last up to 30 years.
  •       They substantially strengthen the teeth – unlike fillings, which can weaken them.
  •       They prolong the natural life of teeth and make future dental work less likely.

If you are concerned about the lasting health of a particular tooth, an inlay or onlay can help you maintain it. In some cases, a dental examination and cleaning will be performed before the restoration.

The Dental Inlay & Onlay Procedure

No matter whether you need an inlay or an onlay, you can plan for two visits with your dentist. During the first meeting, your dentist will remove the damaged fillings and make an impression of the teeth using dental putty. A dental laboratory fabricates the new restoration based on this mold.

At the end of your first dental appointment, a temporary restoration is made so your tooth will be protected while waiting for the inlay or onlay to be manufactured.

A few weeks later, your dentist will verify the fit of the inlay or onlay and then bond it using ultra-strong dental adhesive. Because of this very precise process, the inlay or onlay will fit exactly when it is finally placed in the mouth.

Each appointment takes about an hour. Mild gum irritation may result, but subsides within days.
