Thanks to modern dental technologies and procedures, acquiring a picture-perfect smile is much easier these days. Aside from braces and crowns, you have the option of attaching veneers or lumineers. Both are made of a porcelain-based material and are bound to the top of your teeth to cover up any number of dental imperfections.

As cosmetic dentists in New York, we want to make sure you are well informed about these two options so you can understand which is best for you.

Benefits of Veneers & Lumineers

Lumineers are a brand of veneers, so the two work similarly. The great thing about both is that they are comfortable and natural looking. Because they are formed from a thin layer of porcelain, they have a translucent look that mimics an actual tooth. They are also less complicated than other dental fixes, such as braces or crowns, however, they are durable, highly stain resistant and very easy to maintain.

What is the Difference Between Veneers and Lumineers?

Veneers and lumineers both enhance smiles by hiding unwanted dental imperfections, but they are applied with different approaches.

Veneers

Applying veneers can require up to two visits that involve a very critical first step. Your dentist must shave down and reshape some of your teeth to prevent a bulky or unnatural fit. This can consist of the removal of about five millimeters from the tooth’s surface, including the removal of the enamel, which will leave your tooth unprotected when the veneer is not in place. This is a big consideration if you plan on removing the veneers in the future.

Lumineers

This approach is considered less invasive than veneers in that the original tooth or teeth are left in their original state. The enamel stays put, ensuring the protection of your teeth. This is because lumineers are much thinner in design when compared to veneers. Rest assured, they are just as durable. Although they can feel slightly bulkier, we work diligently to apply them accurately to achieve a natural look and feel. Overall, the procedure is quicker due to the omission of the teeth shaving that occurs with veneers.

Cost

Pricing for veneers can range from $500 to $1,900 per tooth, while lumineers run anywhere between $800 and $2,000 per tooth. Regardless of the procedure you opt for, NYC offers financing options and workable patient payment plans.

Are Veneers or Lumineers Right For Me?

Keep in mind that these little porcelain cover ups are primarily used for minor cosmetic issues. They may not be your best bet if you require extreme orthodontic adjustments. If you are simply looking to fix a small chip, widen small teeth or cover stained teeth, veneers and lumineers are great options.
