What is Dental Bonding?
Dental bonding is a procedure that involves applying a tooth-colored resin to an existing tooth that is decayed, fractured, chipped or discolored. This procedure is used in cosmetic dentistry, leaving the patient with a much-improved smile. It is a fantastic alternative to fillings that are usually applied to cavities, or to teeth with exposed roots that are caused by receding gums.
What Can Dental Bonding Fix?
There are many imperfections dental bonding can improve, including:
- Decayed teeth or cavities
- Chipped or cracked teeth
- Discolored teeth
- Abnormally small teeth
- Misshapen teeth
- Exposed teeth roots
How is Dental Bonding Done?
There are two approaches to dental bonding: direct composite and adhesive. Regardless of the type, it is a fairly simple procedure that requires little to no foundational work. In minor cases, such as when a cavity is being filled, anesthesia is not typically prescribed. At All Smiles Dental, we also make sure that the resin used matches the color of your teeth so the final result looks natural.
Direct Composite Bonding: In this process, your dentist will use tooth-colored composites to fill decayed teeth, close gaps, repair chips/cracks or strengthen worn-down tooth edges. The composites can also be applied directly to tooth surfaces to achieve quick and easy smile improvements.
Adhesive Bonding: Instead of composites, adhesive bonding utilizes restorations that are attached to teeth. Your dentist is more likely to go this route when implementing crowns, veneers, bridges and inlays/onlays. In the adhesive bonding procedure, your dentist will roughen the surface of your tooth with a phosphoric acid solution. After a short while, this is removed and a bonding liquid is applied. Next, the resin is attached to the tooth so your dentist can mold it into a smooth and natural shape. This new mold is then hardened with an ultraviolet curing light. These steps are repeated until the new attachment is the exact shape desired. Once approved, your dentist will polish the new addition to match the shine of the surrounding teeth.
How Much Does Dental Bonding Cost?
This procedure will run anywhere between $100 to $400 per tooth. We recommend checking with your dental insurance company to see how much of this procedure would be covered. Also keep in mind that at All Smiles Dental, we offer financing options for individuals who would benefit from payment plans.
Advantages of Dental Bonding
Dental bonding is a very easy, common and low-cost procedure. It is quick, easy and doable in one visit depending on how many teeth require attention. Unlike other cosmetic procedures, dental bonding involves little to no enamel removal and rarely requires anesthesia. All of these considerations are part of what brings the cost way down. On top of this, there is little upkeep required. As long as you maintain normal oral hygiene, your new smile will look and feel wonderful!
