What is a Crown?

A crown is an artificial covering for the top of a tooth. It makes up for what a tooth has lost in shape, size or appearance. The crown is shaped just like a tooth and covers the entire tooth above the gum.

What are Crowns Used For?

Crowns are useful when the tooth itself has lost its ability to be a functioning part of the mouth. If a tooth is weak, worn down or cracked, a crown can hold it together and protect it. Crowns are necessary following root canals and other procedures. Dental crowns can help with teeth that need large-scale repair of a tooth’s shape, color or alignment. They can provide points to attach dental bridges and cover implants. Sometimes crowns are used in conjunction with fillings or to cover a tooth that is too decayed to even accept a filling.

Are Crowns Right for Me?

If you suffer from any of the conditions mentioned above, crowns might be the right solution. Alternatively, you might need a new crown if an existing one has become loose or damaged. To know if crowns are the right choice for you, consider your options. Permanent crowns are made in a dental lab, and the best kinds are either gold fused to porcelain or ceramic crowns with a porcelain layer on the outside. These are both considered porcelain crowns, which can be matched to the color of your teeth and will not look noticeable in your mouth.

The Procedure for Placing a Crown

The dental crown procedure at All Smiles Dental begins with making room for the crown by reducing the size of the tooth. This way, the crown can be the same size as the original size of the tooth and will fit into the mouth correctly. One of our dentists will send an impression of the original tooth off to a dental lab, where a crown will be custom made to look exactly like the tooth. If necessary, a temporary crown will be placed over the tooth on the initial visit to protect it until the permanent crown is ready. Once the permanent crown arrives from the lab, it is secured into place with dental cement.

Caring For Your Crowns

Just like your original teeth, crowns will last longer if you take good care of them. Crowns should be brushed and flossed regularly to remove bacteria. Stay away from foods such as hard candy that could crack the crown, and do not chomp on ice. Also avoid excessive jaw clenching and teeth grinding if possible, as these habits will shorten the lifespan of the crowns.
